Big and dramatic, this gold plate brooch by William deLillo depicts a lizard or gecko, his body with four raised sections, all four feet with splayed toes. It measures 4' wide, 2 1/2" high, and has a c clasp closure with safety catch. It is signed on the back in an oval cartouche with the deLillo name. Gold plate over brass, there are some sections where the plate is rubbed a bit, and there are some very small spots, all visible in close up photos. This form is quite rare, and like some of deLillo's designs, may be a commission or one of a kind item. William deLillo is considered one of the finest jewelry designers of his era, and began his career designing for Cartier, Harry Winston, and Miriam Haskell. In 1968 he joined with Robert F. Clark to open their own design studio, under deLillo's name and made beautiful and compelling jewelry designs together until 1971. DeLillo jewelry was made for Chanel, YSL, and other important designers, and the Duchess of Windsor wore their jewelry. As pieces are uncommon, his works are in very high demand, often bringing prices similar to the important designers of fine jewelry of the mid century period. Figural pieces are extremely rare. Unique, whimsical, and compelling, this brooch is a real treasure, Please see all photos for detail and condition, and keep in mind that it has been worn, and will show some evidence of wear and usage.
