This strand of antique spindle whorls are of the finest quality, most are bone, a few may actually be stone. The bone varies in color and some had been painted or dyed, blue, red, green grey, or black. There are varieties of shapes, including the tradition whorl with a flat side, as well as barrel shapes, round beads, and turned ridged beads. The majority of the beads have incised designs of some kind. Strung on an older heavy string that looks like silk, they are in very good condition, a few with chips and losses. The largest flat bone bead measures 28 mm. Similar whorls are found from Roman and Viking times, and seem to be found throughout the Mideast and into Afghanistan. The group highly resembles types from the Sasanian Empire, 224-651 AD, an area now within the modern country of Iran, and ancient beads from Afghanistan, ca 1000 AD. The strand is offered for sale in its entirety, none of the beads are sold separately. These are beautiful, a marvelous example of craftsmanship and artistry in the making of functional items.
