BeautifulIy crafted in the Renaissance Revival style, this wonderful footed bronze coffer has a rich variety of scenes on all sides and on top, and is lined with dark blue twill fabric. The case measures 10 3/8" x 6 3/4", x 5 1/4" high, and sits on four pad feet in the shape of fierce animal heads that extend about 1/2" out from each corner. The top panel depicts a hunting scene, set in a lush forest with flowers and birds, 6 figures, 8 dogs, and a woman riding a unicorn sidesaddle. One of the hunters carries rabbits, another blows a horn, and others carry falcons. The front panel is set in very baroque scrolling elements, with a mix of children, monkeys, a woman and child, and a griffon being chased by a man with a club as it carries off a baby. Very Hieronmous Bosch. The side panels depict men battling fierce lions, and a woman carrying a baby, all with deep rococo designs. The back depicts an archer, a woman with babes in her arms, a young child, and other figures, all within the same elaborate scrolling designs. There is a locking mechanism, but no key.ly made, it is unsigned, probably Continental in origin, France or Italy most likely. Note that the background of all panels is stipled, making a nice darker contrast with the raised designs. Very heavy, it weighs 8 pounds. This is a real treasure, a perfect place to keep other little treasures. Shipping via USPS with special packing and insurance.
