Edo era Japanese Satsuma/Stoneware plate with head of Samurai warrior holding staff, with elaborate enamel work throughout, a band of raised enamel designs at the edge.
Measures 7 1/4" in diameter and 1 1/4" deep on short foot.
His helmet is decorated in bands of tan ribbon like forms, all with scrolling gold designs. Raised white flowers and green dots further enhance the headdress.
As is visible in the photos, his entire face, hand, and staff are all raised from the surface, creating a very dramatic and vibrant design. There is gold enhancement on his armour as well, and most of the gilded decoration is intact.
Condition is very good considering the age, (pre 1850), with only very minor wear.
The piece is artful and dramatic, with a wonderful depiction of a fierce Samurai swordsman.
