Extremely rare bronze Lobi 3 legged stool, in antelope form. Measures 10" high, 18" wide and 5 1/2" deep.. Lobi stools are always a lovely form, sometimes with figural designs, and bronze stools are very rare. Such examples were always made for a chief or other high ranking member of the community. The Lobi culture is located primarily within the current country of Burkina Faso. The elegant antelope shape with curved horns and subtle detail is a tour de force in African artifacts, obviously the creation of a gifted artisan. The three legs below the slightly waisted back and the horned antelope head attached with a lobed and incised cartouche are in the finest minimalist style. The sleek simplicity of the antelope figure is beautiful, and one can easily see how so much of African art inspired the modernist movement in western fine art. The stool shows wear and a great deal of age, and has the kind of verdigris patinization that is acquired over many years. From every angle it is striking and artful, with a sense of energy and modernism that is compelling. We have dealt in tribal arts and other sculpture for decades, and find this piece to be exceptional and a real treasure. Please see all photos for details and email any questions.
