Fine Limoges enamel heavy copper plaque with image of Virgin Mary and Christ Child, in medieval style. Lozenge shape within a cross format, heavily incised with polychrome enamel details. Measures 9 5/8" high, 5 3/4" wide, roughly 3/8" deep including the heads in relief. The lozenge shape is raised above the cross form, and the heads of both the Madonna and Child are 3 dimensional. Religious symbols are incised on both sides of Marys head. The shape, raised heads, incised designs and fine enamel work are all similar to medieval Limoges enamels with religious figures. The back shows signs of wear, original construction, verdigris, and has two spots where it was once attached to a backing of some kind. The work is very detailed and refined, was probably from a church or other religious artifact or structure. Good condition, all the enamel is intact, has slight signs of wear, and there is a fissure in the copper in the upper left corner from the edge to the shoulder of the Virgin (visible in photos, is very thin, and is stable).
