Wonderful pair of Ming Dynasty ceramic joss stick holders in the form of guardian lions in rich turquoise glaze on brown pedestals. Measure 6 3/4" high, 5 3/4" wide, and 2 1/2" deep. Figures are of buff colored clay, are hollow with hole in top for holding sticks. The turquoise glaze is somewhat mottled over the surface, deeper in color in some areas, and having a greenish hue in other areas, while the raised areas show the color of the underlying clay. Gorgeous color and luster to the glaze. They appear to have been made in a mold, as the details are so very similar, with differences in precise incised designs and color of glaze. The brown glaze is less satin in finish, is slightly matte with some shinier sections. Condition is good for their age, there are spots of loss to glaze, chips to base, and wear throughout. Both have visible lines on the bottom rim, going into the base, but they appear to be slight flaws from the making and are not later cracks. As they are antique, and have the described condition issues, are sold as is. A wonderful pair, great color and design. Price is for the pair.
