Large Tibetan or Napalese Gau, the traditional pendant in box form for carrying an amulet, relic, prayers or religious item, this one is especially large, with a beautiful shape with fine filigree on top, inlaid turquoise stones, backed with copper. Has looped sections on two sides for fastening onto a chain for wear, and for attaching other ritual elements. Measures4 7/8" wide, 4 3/4" high and 1" deep. The shape is often used for these traveling items, a very lovely form of rectangle with curved ends and wide round additions on each side for attachment. The fine filigree work further enhances the item, with gilt section in beautiful contrast with the vivid color of the turquoise. Back is of hammered copper and just sets into the back, there is no hinge. Condition shows wear to surface, small dents and abrasions, tarnish on silver, oxidation on copper. As this is an antique item and shows wear and age, it is sold as is. Note that the copper backing fits fairly loosely in the gau, and we have put some tape to hold it. If it is to be worn, it would be wise to have a jeweler adjust it so that it fits more tightly. Of wonderful size and design, this is a gorgeous example of this cherished Tibetan item and was likely worn with either a cloth necklace or perhaps a heavy silver chain. Such large and dramatic examples would have been highly prized in the community. Please see photos for details and email any questions. Shipping via USPS or Fedex with tracking and insurance.
