A very folky and artful cane or walking stick, constructed of hardwood peeled tree branch with wrought iron horse head, in modernist, brutalist style, early to mid 20th century, wonderful sculptural form. Measures The head consists of various pieces of iron, all welded together to form the head of a horse, with spiked mane, head uplifted with great sense of energy. The shaft is a single branch or young tree, knots up and down the surface, wood is very hard and dense, slightly tapered at bottom. Note that antique and vintage canes and walking sticks were often ornamental only, and never should be utilized as a cane to hold weight or function as a support, even ones made of tough materials can age and show weakness, so never put weight on an old cane. Condition shows rust on the head, wear to the shaft, and some cracks that appear to be on the surface only, as the shaft is firm. The bottom of the shaft shows wear as well. The head fits well over the top of the shaft and is very tightly fitted. As the item is vintage or antique, it is sold as is. A very fine example of folky, outsider, or brutalist art, the maker of this stick was a true artist. Please see all photos for details and email any questions.
