Stylized ceramic elephant by Professor Max Laeuger with his stamped and incised hallmarks, depicting a charming elephant in white glaze with blue and green details over a crackle glaze, very much in the style of Jugendstil and Secessionist works of art. Measures 5 1/4" in width, 5" high, and 4" deep. German and Austrian ceramic artisans of the era were known for their sometimes simple, bright, and whimsical forms, in contrast to earlier design elements that were opulent and florid. Laeuer is known for beautiful glazes and designs, most of his works in vase or utilitarian form, sculptures are less common. The foot of the elephant is stamped with the hallmark associated with his design work at Karlsruhe between 1921-1928, along with initials LK, the numbers 1689, 22, and Made in Germany. The Karlsruhe ceramic company was in business between 1864 and 1952. The crazed surface is intentional, and the raised designs and color are appealing, giving this figure a playful demeanor. Condition is excellent, no chips, cracks, losses or wear to glaze.
