Beautiful quality Spanish Colonial stye mate cup on four legs, sterling silver mounts with gold accents over a round and flattened gourd body, Rococo silver work depicting flowers, feathers, swirling designs, enhanced with gold flowers and bust of a man wearing a hat, 19th century or possibly much earlier, unsigned. Measures 5 5/8" high 3 1/4" wide, 3 1/8" deep the body is 3" in diameter and the opening at the top is 1 1/8" diameter. Gold accents include the floral, foliate and image of a man, with gold trim around the lip and around the loop connecting the four legs. Mate cups are found in much of South America and were used by the indigenous population prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, and mate drinking was embraced in many countries, from the Andean countries to Argentina, and is still a beverage consumed by many. Early mate cups were crafted by skilled artisans, many from European countries, and the skill spread throughout the regions to indigenous artisans. Like this form, the Baroque and Rococo designs were brought during the earliest colonial communities, and the designs lasted for centuries. This is an exceptional mate utensil, the gourd a fine symmetrical shape so beautifully mounted with repousse silver and gold designs. The gourd has natural marks on each side and has a very dark finish, reddish when worn, so may have some kind of paint or lacquer finish. This is an antique gourd mate, for decor only, and should not be considered for use with hot mate. Unsigned, it is an early example prior to the marking of silver items in the region. Condition is very good for the age, the gourd is intact, the silver in good condition and the gold applied designs are also intact. Visible signs of wear, and some tarnish are visible, consistent with age of this antique piece. The band attached to the four legs is bent, but does not affect how it stands. Sold as is.
