Here is a brooch with an ancient Celtic design – two birds with enameled wings, bodies and eyes, with interlaced (also called “entrelac”) silver above and below. The enamel is in blue, red, green, and white. It is marked 925 for sterling silver, and has several other marks which are illegible. 1-1/2” X 1-1/4”. There are a couple places where the enamel isn’t perfect – please see photos. Probably a more recent casting of an older piece, and very pretty indeed! The photos are part o...

The design of this lovely 15 ct gold Victorian ring surprisingly modern. Two faceted rubies are set off by three seed pearls, with each gem surrounded by a square bezel. It has English hallmarks for Chester [England], 1865-6, and 15 carat gold, as well as a maker's mark of BHJ. The ring is a size 7.

This little dragon will be a fierce defender as he graces your lapel. He is made of 14 k gold and holds a diamond in his mouth. The pin is 2 ¼" long and has a maker's mark for Alling & Company of Newark, NJ. As did many companies of the era, the company changed ownership, leadership, and name over the years. Starting on or before 1837, Alling, Hall & Dodd eventually became Alling & Company before 1896. Keywords gold, , diamond, Art Nouveau Category Estate Jewelry:Gold:Art Nouveau...

Swirls and Dangles A lovely Victorian pin with coral beads and branch in a gold-filled setting. The three dangles, with beads and a small coral branch give movement and liveliness when it's worn. The whiplash design of the mounting suggests that it has an Art Nouveau influence. Circa 1885.

Here is a graceful garland or festoon necklace composed of seed pearls set in 10 kt gold, with two pearls built into the draping chains, and a pearl dangle. The whole thing measures 14-5/8” (we have gold necklace extenders if that’s too short). The decorated section measures 1-1/4” x 3/4” including the dangle. It is in excellent condition. One seed pearl is missing, but it’s really hard to tell - we only noticed when examining it under the microscope. Circa 1910 – it would have been ...

This plique a jour pendant is centered with an oval opal and accented with eight colorless brilliants and a fresh water pearl dropper. The translucent enamel is an unusual and lovely blue in color. Plique a jour, that unusual, difficult, and beautiful technique, dates from the 15th century. It was used by Cellini, then revived in the late 1800s in France. The metal frame in this lovely piece is 900 silver, suggesting that the piece is most likely German or Austrian in origin. Circa 1900.

Here is an intriguing pin in the shape of a lyre (an early version of the harp). The coppery rose gold is engraved, with black enamel highlights, and dedicated to “GAO From G.V.” It measures 1-1/16” x 13/16” and weighs 3.6g, with the original old pin stem assembly. Unmarked, the brooch tests as 14k, and the pin stem tests as at least 10k. In excellent condition. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. NOTE: rose gold can be hard to photograph accurately. Th...

This lovely (unmarked but tested) 10kt gold jewel is from the early 1800s (around Jane Austen's time), when cannetille work was the vogue: very fine gold wires twisted into thin ropes and then formed into rosettes and other shapes. The amethyst has a lovely delicate shade of purple, and weighs approximately 2.5 carats – it’s very deep. Amethysts are said to bring calm, and help banish headaches. The bale is decorated very nicely, in keeping with the rest of the piece. The whole lavalier, inc...

Here is one of our favorite rings. It features a jade-like green chalcedony center stone, surrounded by red and green Celtic interlace (also called entrelac) enamel. There is more interlace on the shank. It is just slightly smaller than size 6, and the top measures 13/16” x 5/8”. Chalcedony was thought by Native Americans to promote harmony and good will. It is stamped 14K, and “KB”. There is a little enamel loss, but otherwise it is in excellent condition and so cheerful! The photos ar...

Here is a graceful pin or brooch from the Art Nouveau/Edwardian era. Brought to Europe by the Crusaders from St. John’s Island (Zabargard), peridot is the August birthstone, and is considered to be a stone of healing and protection. This round peridot is framed by an oval of seed pearls, set into a delicate arabesque of gold with more seed pearls, for a total of 30 (2 are replacements). Stamped 14k on the back, with an illegible maker’s mark, it measures 1-1/2” x 7/16" and weighs 2.0g. The...

Here is a stick pin made in the shape of an arrow head. This gorgeous piece features a sparkly cognac-colored diamond of approximately 10 points (a tenth of a carat), but it looks bigger. Above and below the diamond are 2 lovely (cultured?) golden pearls. It weighs 2.3g and is of unmarked but tested 14k yellow gold, which has been hammered to enhance the “arrow head” look – a great reminder that the Arts and Crafts era overlapped the Wild Wild West! It measures 1/2” x 7/16” x 2-1/2" lo...

Here is a fantastic bracelet by Schaverien & Eastmead of Birmingham, England. It is 7” long and 3/8” wide at the widest points, with 5 enameled panels which shade from dark green to pale green to magenta and back again. In between each panel is a round blister pearl. Each connecting link has a hard-to-read mark, probably a lion, also the marks for Birmingham, 1909, and “S&E”. The clasp has a safety chain. One enamel panel has a small black spot, and one has a tiny chip in the enamel, bar...

Here is a brush made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The design looks like the top of an old steamer chest, with a strapping and stud motif – very Steampunk. The top is monogrammed with a fancy "R". It has the Gorham marks, as well as “1857 C”, “Sterling,” and the scissors mark for 1907. It measures 6” x 1 -3/4" across the top, and is in very good condition. Photo note: the bristles are an ivory color, but don’t show up that way in the photos. The photos are part of the desc...

Here is a lovely pendant/pin with a stylized floral motif using green-to-yellow enamel in a design reminiscent of the French fleur-de-lis. It is centered by a small diamond (approx. 5 points), and has a pearl-set modified starburst accenting the enameled “petals.” In 14k rose gold, it measures 1” in diameter at the widest point. The bale folds down nicely when it’s worn as a brooch. We had the enamel touched up a bit at the edges, so it is now in excellent condition. Chain not included. ...

Here is a classic Art Nouveau stick pin centered by an amethyst, birthstone for February. Back in the day, amethysts were thought to prevent drunkenness, as well as being a cure for headaches (is there a theme here?). There is a seed pearl above and one below, all mounted in a (marked and tested) 14k “whiplash” frame (the whiplash motif was very popular with Nouveau artists). Measuring 1/2” x 2-1/4" long, it weighs 1.5g. There is an illegible maker’s mark. The pin is curved, but could be...

Here is an intriguing pair of pins from the Art Nouveau era. They feature a woman’s face flanked by flowers and their hair is greenish! I have been unable to determine what the metal is, so assume it’s not precious. They measure 1-1/4” x 1/2”. The pin stem assemblies are old, but they may be replacements. Circa 1900.
