Here is a small gold-filled Victorian or Edwardian fretwork pin. It measures 15/16” x 7/8”. Somewhat worn in places, but still very pretty. Oddly, the watch hanger tests as 10k. Signed SIMMONS and RFS & Co (for the R.F. Simmons Co. of Attleboro, MA). Circa 1900. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. Thanks! Here is a very sweet pin showing two cupids, a boy and a girl, looking sweet, serene, and loving. Their plique a jour (translucent enamel) wings are a pale purple or mauve color, nicely complimenting the 900 silver. The girl is wearing a tiny necklace of roses. The pin measures 1” x 1-3/4” and weighs 5.7g. The clasp might be a replacement, but the rest is all original, and the pin is in excellent antique condition. It is stamped “DEPOSE” (“patent or registration in France," but other ...

Here is a lovely and very old serving spoon which could have graced the dining room of any of Miss Jane Austen’s upper crust characters. It has a berry motif in the gold-washed interior of the bowl (the wash or gilt is very pale and doesn’t show up in the photos). By its hallmarks (crowned leopard’s head, lion passant, and date letter “N” with “feathers”), it was made in London during 1768-1769. The maker’s mark is a script “BB”. It measures 8-1/2" x 1-3/4", and weighs approx...

Here is one of our favorite lavaliers! It is quintessential Art Nouveau, having a graceful and elegant shape, with a flower and the classic whiplash motif. The central amethyst weighs approximately 1/2 carat, and accented by 28 seed pearls. Feng Shui practitioners believe amethysts aid in purification, and give access to a higher plane of energy. It tests as 14k, and is that lovely subtle old rose gold color. It weighs 3.3g and measures 1” x 1” at the widest points. Chain not included. In v...

Here is a brush made by the well-known Gorham Manufacturing Company. The design looks like the top of an antique steamer chest, with a strapping and stud motif – very Steampunk. The top is monogrammed with a fancy "R". It has the Gorham marks, as well as “1857 C”, “Sterling,” and the scissors mark for 1907. It measures 6” x 1-3/4" across the top, and is in very good condition. Photo note: the bristles are an ivory color, but don’t show up that way in the photos. The photos are pa...

Here is an engaging portrait in silver, of a wind-swept youthful person clad in a cloak and hood. It’s very detailed and just lovely. We think it’s a boy (very unusual in jewelry), as the hair seems to be quite short under the hood. The hood itself looks like a cap made from a flower, as seen on fairies in Victorian children’s books. It measures 1-1/8” wide, is hollow, and is marked “STERLING TOP GERMAN SILVER BACK”. The (sterling) front is in very good condition. “German silver...

Here is a pendant featuring a large amethyst, measuring about 10mm across. It is set in a framework of bright gold leaves that brings to mind the Arts and Crafts era, with another leaf on the bale, and a fringe of tiny seed pearls dangling below – sweet! From the top of the bale to the bottom of the fringe it measures 1-1/2”, and from side to side it is 3/4” at the widest points. It is marked and tested 14k gold and weighs 1.8g. We believe it was made during the 1960s, but we’re not sur...

This sparkly stunner has 2 big paste stones (7/16”), 2 smaller ones (1/4”), and 8 small accent stones (there should be 9. One is missing, but it’s really hard to tell), set in white metal. The whole thing measures 2” x 9/16”. Stamped “Czechoslov” on the back, it is in overall good condition: the stones have a couple chips, and a little abrasion, but the stones are so sparkly it’s hard to spot these. The clasp is bent over a bit, but still works just fine. Circa 1920. The photos ...

Here is a heavily engraved silver pin is from the estate of Helen Aman, who escaped from the Bolshevik Revolution to (eventually) settle in California. It was one of the jewels from her childhood. It consists of a bell (with a clapper – but it doesn’t chime) dangling from an angled bar. Marked 84 for 875 silver, it also has a partial city mark, which we believe is for Moscow. It measures 1-3/8” x 7/8", and is in excellent antique condition, with a nice patina. (For more of Helen’s story,...

Emeralds (birthstone for May) have been thought to preserve love and bring wisdom. These sweet bright green emerald earrings are unmarked, but the gold tests as 14kt. They are 13/16” long, and the buttercup settings measure 1/2” across. The stones measure 5-1/2mm across. I believe the ear wires used to have hooks to slip into, but those are gone and the stubs smoothed over for comfort. One of the emeralds is chipped in the back, but both stones face up well. The gold shows a nice patina and ...

Here is a lovely pin in the style of Murrle, Bennett and Archibald Knox. It features a heart interlaced with a navette-shaped frame (this interlace-type motif is also called “entrelac”). It is centered by a pretty oval turquoise, and has a safety chain – always useful! Unsigned, and marked 9ct. It measures 1-1/2 x 3/4", and weighs 2.6g. The gold has a nice patina, and it is in excellent antique condition. Circa 1900. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. T...

Here is an intriguing pin in the shape of a lyre (an early version of the harp). The coppery rose gold is engraved, with black enamel highlights, and dedicated to “GAO From G.V.” It measures 1-1/16” x 13/16” and weighs 3.6g, with the original old pin stem assembly. Unmarked, the brooch tests as 14k, and the pin stem tests as at least 10k. In excellent condition. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. Here is a Victorian gold-in-quartz (also called “gold quartz” and “gold-bearing quartz”) brooch. Gold-in-quartz is rare and becoming more so. It’s our understanding that it is now found in very few places in the world – possibly only one mine in California. The 14kt yellow gold setting has twisted gold on top of a carved gold oval. It measures 1-3/8 x 1-1/8" and weighs 6.8g. The pin assembly has been replaced. In excellent condition. The photos are part of the description, so please ...

Here is a pretty woman’s face in profile. Her long golden hair trails down to end with a tiny baroque or freshwater pearl. Total length of the face, hair and pearl a little less than 3/4”. This design was based on a drawing by Charles Dana Gibson – a Gibson Girl! (See the final photograph.) It is marked 14k, weighs 1.2g, and is in excellent condition. It doesn’t have a maker’s mark, but we have seen this same stick pin with Alling’s mark. Circa 1910. The photos are part of the descr...

This wonderful Georgian ring could have been worn by one of Jane Austen’s more upper-crust characters! It features a rose-cut diamond (pointed top instead of flat), set in 14kt gold with decorations in black enamel on the shank, which are still in excellent condition. Diamond is the birthstone for April. The ring is approximately a size 5. It isn’t possible to estimate the weight of set rose cut diamonds; it is in the I range for clarity – normal for its era. Unmarked, it is pre-1836 (Miss...

Here is a classic Art Nouveau stick pin centered by a round amethyst, birthstone for February. Back in the day, amethysts were thought to prevent drunkenness, as well as being a cure for headaches (we sense a theme here!). There is a seed pearl above and one below, all mounted in a (marked and tested) 14kt “whiplash” framework (the whiplash motif was very popular with Nouveau artists). Measuring ½” x 2-1/4" long, it weighs 1.5g. There is an illegible maker’s mark. The pin is curved, but...
