The coin tests as silver, most likely sterling. On one side is the face of Friedrich (presumably) and his wife, a Maltese cross, and the words “FRIEDRICH * I * 1701 * WILHELM * II * 1901”, on the other side is an eagle with a crown above, and “DEUTSCHES REICH 1901 ZWEI MARK”. The rest is white metal. The swivel clasp has a mark, which looks like a plow. We haven’t been able to track it down. The coin and split ring weigh approximately .40oz, and the whole thing .94oz. The coin is 1-1/1...

Here is a sash buckle composed of swirling flowers, leaves, and a flower bud. It’s a mixed-metal piece. The silver plate shows some wear - yellow metal shows through at some of the high points. We believe the gold to be about 9kt, and it’s some type of plating. The buckle measures 3 x 2-1/2" and weighs in at 47.5 grams. Unmarked. In overall very good condition, except for the few worn spots already mentioned; the gold might be a little worn in a few places too – it’s difficult to tell be...

Here is a classic cigar band or “gypsy” ring, made from rich yellow 18kt gold. The center stone is a diamond, the outer two stones are rubies. It has decorative scroll work on the shoulders. The hallmarks are for Chester, 1903, and there is a maker’s mark that we can’t read. It weighs 4.0g, and is approximately size 5. The shank is a little off round, and it’s possible that it was sized at some time, however it is in excellent condition. The photos are part of the description; please ...

Here is an English jewel which reflects the aesthetics of fin de siècle France and Russia, with its pink topazes and demantoid garnets. The fairly large oval topazes are surrounded by swirls of seed-pearl-set gold, and set off by 4 bright green demantoid garnets, 2 of which are set into the fine chains which connect the top section to the bottom; of the other 2, the top one is a modified pear shape, the other is oval. It measures 2” long by 1-1/8” across at the widest point, and weighs 5.4g...

How very Art Nouveau with its lovely lady and sweeping tresses! This 14 k gold bar pin is 1 3/4 by 3/8 inch in size. The classic Art Nouveau lady has long, flowing tresses that blow in the wind. It is late 19th or early 20th century and was made by the Krementz company. The round hinge and C clasp suggest the earlier date.

Here is a Victorian style ring with a Gothic design sensibility. The elaborate prongs set off the large iolite (approx. 2 ct.) very nicely, and there are 4 small single cut accent diamonds. The setting measures 7/8” north to south, and 3/4” east to west. Approximately size 8-1/2. It is marked 14k, the setting is rose gold and the shank is yellow gold. The stones are in excellent condition. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. Thanks! We do lay-away. Shippi...

Here is an engaging portrait in silver, of a wind-swept youthful person in a cloak and hood. It’s very detailed and just lovely. We think it’s a boy (very unusual in jewelry), as the hair seems to be quite short under the hood. The hood itself looks like a cap made from a flower, as seen on fairies in Victorian children’s books. It measures 1-1/8” wide, is hollow, and is marked “STERLING TOP GERMAN SILVER BACK”. The (sterling) front is in very good condition. German silver is white ...

Here is a romantic stick pin for your lapel, depicting a woman in profile with a pearl nestled into the curls of her hair. It would make a great gift for a man or a woman, or a sweet addition to your own collection. Marked 14k, it’s made from yellow gold, and signed by the maker, Whiteside & Blank. It measures 2-3/8”, and weighs 2.0g. The pin is slightly bent, and the back is dented a little, but this doesn’t detract from the beauty of this enchanting jewel when worn. Historical note: Mr....

Here is a highly detailed pin by Edmond-Henri Becker, one of the best-known French medalists. We really love all the details! The front shows Joan of Arc (patron saint of France and of soldiers) in profile, also a shield decorated with a sword, a crown, and 2 fleurs-de-lis. Above her head is a banner saying “Jehanne d’Arc” and “1429”. The back shows a banner with a saint (or possibly the Madonna and Child – the metal is somewhat worn here) with two people praying. Also shown are a sp...

Charles Horner was a major maker of Arts & Craft enamel pieces. This necklace is simple, with its shaded green and blue enamel and pleasingly elegant sterling silver frame. It is signed Charles Horner and is on a 14" chain. The hallmarks indicate it is sterling and was made in Chester in 1912-3. The enamel pendant is 3/4 X 1".

Here is a graceful garland or festoon necklace composed of seed pearls set in 10 kt gold, with two pearls built into the draping chains, and a pearl dangle. The whole thing measures 14-5/8” (we have gold necklace extenders if needed). The decorated section measures 1-1/4” x 1/4” including the dangle. It is in excellent condition. One seed pearl is missing, but it’s really hard to tell - we only noticed when examining it under the microscope. Circa 1910 – it would have been right at hom...

Here is a beautiful pin which is an interesting mixture of the Art Nouveau and Victorian styles. The Victorians loved to use real insects, especially these green beetles, in jewelry. The Nouveau jewelers loved naturalistic motifs, but generally didn’t use the insect itself – yet the design of the pin is very Nouveau. Marked 14k, the pale gold setting contrasts nicely with the deep green of the beetle. The pin stem assembly is original. The clasp has a nice safety lever; it is bent a tiny bit...

Here is an elegant queen gracing the front of this antique locket. She wears a crown with a row of 7 tiny single-cut diamonds, and one slightly larger full-cut diamond at the top of the crown. Her hair cascades down to her shoulder, and gold disks hang from the crown. There is a little dent at about cheek bone height. The back has a monogram, possibly an S, and has several little dents, which are exaggerated in the photos. The rose gold (very hard to photograph the color accurately) tests at abo...

Here is a beautiful ring which is unsigned, but attributed to Bernard Instone, one of the well-known Arts & Crafts era jewelers. He often used leaves-as-prongs in his ring settings, and as was often the way in the A&C movement, he didn’t use costly stones nor gold, so he could keep his prices affordable. This ring is made from sterling silver and set with a blue-green “Swiss lapis” (dyed quartz) which measures approximately 3/4” x 9/16”. It is about size 5-1/2, however due to the cons...

Here is a fascinating stick pin, depicting a crescent moon – symbol of the female principal, intuition and new beginnings (and doesn’t that sound great!); an arrow – symbol of swiftness, Sagittarius, and sexual attraction (Cupid’s bow); and a 5-pointed star, symbolic of so many things we won’t even start! It is set with 11 turquoises (birthstone for December, believed to be good for healing and focus) and one seed pearl. The rose gold tests as 14kt. It measures 7/8” at the widest po...

This striking jewel tests as a very strong 14kt, so it’s probably 15kt, and from England. It is set with what we are pretty sure is an iolite (hard to test because of the setting), and 4 pear-shaped purple garnets, all foiled, all set within an Etruscan Revival motif of coiling snake-like decorated gold ropes and leaves, with two dangling gold chains. The brooch measures 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/4" deep and weighs 8.7g. With the chains, the whole piece measures 2-1/2” long. The pin stem assembly se...

This gorgeous vulture is made of gilded silver [800] and plique a jour. It's a Victorian pin in the Egyptian Revival Style. The translucent wings are yellow-green, shading to burnt orange. The tops of the wings are opaque enamel in yellowish green. The pin is centered with a matching yellowish green stone which is to date [and probably forever] unidentified. It is not peridot, nor is it glass. The pin is 2" across and is circa 1880.
