Here is a splendid locket depicting some sort of creature: zephyr? Lion? Or some other mythological critter? He has a diamond in his mouth, and his eyes are red stones (too small to ID). Measuring 1-1/8”, weighing 9.5g, and marked 10k, he is set up for 2 photographs with both celluloid and photo rings. He's a somewhat rosy gold (NOTE that it was really hard to capture the color of the gold in the photographs), and has the maker’s mark for Kroll. In excellent condition and circa 1900. Chain n...

This is a classic Victorian pin/pendant in a pinwheel design, with 9 lovely bright dark purple garnet and glass doublets (from the period when amethysts were quite rare and expensive, so they made these doublets out of comparatively inexpensive material), and lots of seed pearls. It has both a pin stem assembly for use as a brooch, and a jump ring so it can be worn as a necklace. It is stamped 10k on the clasp. There is a small break in the gold framework, which isn’t noticeable without magnif...

Here is a dainty little pin, measuring 7/8” across. Some of the leaves are enameled in shades of green, yellow and orange, alternating with leaves set with 3 seed pearls each, and centering another seed pearl. The findings are original, with a neat security clasp. On the clasp is a maker’s mark consisting of an arrow with a circle at the end, most likely for Robert Klitz, of New York. No hallmarks, but it tests for 14k gold. Circa 1900. The photos are part of the description; please examine...

Here is a striking pin, which is a mixture of the Art Nouveau and Victorian styles. The Victorians loved to use real insects, especially these green beetles, in jewelry. The Nouveau jewelers loved naturalistic motifs, but generally didn’t use the insect itself – yet the design of the pin is very Nouveau. Marked 14k, the pale gold setting contrasts nicely with the deep green of the beetle. The pin stem assembly is original. The clasp has a nice safety lever; it is bent a little bit but still ...

Here is an intriguing pin in the shape of a lyre (an early version of the harp). The coppery rose gold is engraved, with black enamel highlights, and dedicated to “GAO From G.V.” It measures 1-1/16” x 13/16” and weighs 3.6g, with the original old pin stem assembly. Unmarked, the brooch tests as 14k, and the pin stem tests as at least 10k. In excellent condition. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully. NOTE: rose gold can be hard to photograph accurately. Th...

Here is an interesting and unusual stick pin. Perfect for your lapel, the beetle is in very good condition (though the pin is slightly bent), and is set in unmarked but tested 14k rose gold. The beetle itself is 9/16” x 7/16” at the widest points, and is held firmly in place by 4 prongs. The whole thing is 2-3/4” long. The Victorians loved to use organic things in their jewelry, including real beetles. This particular type seems to have been a favorite. They are very collectible! Late Vict...

Here is a graceful pin or brooch from the Art Nouveau/Edwardian era. Brought to Europe by the Crusaders from St. John’s Island (Zabargard), peridot is the August birthstone, and is considered to be a stone of healing and protection. This round peridot is framed by an oval of seed pearls, set into a delicate arabesque of gold with more seed pearls, for a total of 30 (2 are replacements). Stamped 14k on the back, with an illegible maker’s mark, it measures 1-1/2” x 7/16" and weighs 2.0g. The...

Ruby is the birthstone for July. The ring is hallmarked for Birmingham, England and 15 karat gold, and a date mark for 1877, and also a maker’s mark for “P&E”. Size 7-1/2. Here is a very Victorian grooming chatelaine from the 1800s. It has a Chinese fish motif at the top, and dangling from that are 3 implements: a tweezers, an ear-cleaning device, and a third implement for cleaning nails. (We saw a similar chatelaine on eBay that was advertised as a device for opium users, but we don’t think so! But as non-opium users, we could be wrong ….) It is unmarked but tests positive for silver, and with a patina consistent with age. It is lacking a belt hook, but is i...

Here is a simple yet lovely stickpin with a stylized flower design based on a Japanese family crest. It is marked “k20” on the back, and tests as a very strong 20kt. The flower head measures 1/2 x 7/8”, and the whole pin is 2-1/2” long. It weighs 2.4g. The pin is a bit bent, not surprisingly given the high gold content (please see photos), otherwise in excellent condition. Circa 1900. Japanese art had a huge influence on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and America, and this stick pin ...
