Here we have a very detailed bat, wings spread wide, ready to flitter through the night sky. In China, bats are a symbol of good luck. To Native Americans, they are symbolic of intuition, journeying, and rebirth. And then of course there’s that whole vampire thing. This bat is stamped 925 for sterling silver. It measures 2” x 1-1/8”. The 24” chain is marked 925 Italy. Together they weigh 17.8g. The photos are part of the description; please examine them carefully...

This unusual sterling silver and enamel pendant comes out of the Arts & Crafts movement, spearheaded by John Ruskin and William Morris, et al. The enamel colors are associated with the women’s suffrage movement in the UK: green (Give), white (Women the), and (Vote) violet – or at least, that’s the story! The free-standing wire work (so unusual!) interlaces around the body of the piece, and holds an oval of mother-of-pearl in place. Also unusual is the use of brown enamel...

This striking Jugendstil or Arts & Crafts pendant is enameled in white and purple. It is made from 900 silver (sterling is 925), and centered by a lovely oval amethyst which is flanked above and below by tiny seed pearls. There is a pearl dangle (which we added, as the original was missing) below an arc of textured metal. It measures 1-1/2” x 7/8” and weighs 4.7g...

We love this pin! The colors are so pretty, and the leafy design is so very Arts & Crafts. It consists of a berry and leaf motif, highlighted by a central cushion-cut blue chalcedony (thought to bring good luck), with a circular green aventurine on either side. Measuring 1-1/4” x 3/8", it is unmarked but tests as silver. It is in excellent condition, although the pin is a little bent. The pin stem assembly may be a replacement, but if so, it’s quite an old repair. Circa 1900...

Here is a lovely pendant, enameled in an intense blue with patches of a much lighter blue. The dropper shades from a pale green through a lighter blue into the intense blue of the main part of the jewel. The back is marked sterling silver, and the dropper is marked silver. It measures 1-3/8 x 1-3/16, and is on a new 18” sterling chain. In very good condition overall...

Here is a sky-blue enamel pendant with blue enamel dropper. It tests as silver, most likely sterling. It has two shades of light blue enamel on the front, highlighted by silver flourishes. The dropper is also enameled in shaded hues of blue. The enamel continues on the back in sky blue – so lovely! Excluding the bale, it is 1-1/2” long by just under 3/4” across...

This intriguing locket has a saint, probably St. Peter, holding a key (to the church? To heaven?), and with a bird – a dove? - in the background) on one side. On the other is a photograph of an ecclesiastical-looking person. It contains a touched relic (a bit of ribbon which has been touched to a saint’s bone or something worn by a saint), a tiny metal medal with Mary on one side, saying "Mary conceived without sin” and more Christian imagery on the other, and a wisp of cotton...

This engaging portrait in silver, of a wind-swept person in a cloak and hood, is very detailed and just lovely. We think it’s a boy (unusual!), as the hair seems to be quite short under the hood. The hood itself looks like a cap made from a flower, as seen on fairies in Victorian children’s books. It measures 1-1/8” wide, is hollow, and is marked “STERLING TOP GERMAN SILVER BACK”. German silver is a white metal...

This fantastic bracelet is 7” long and 3/8” wide at the widest points, with 5 enameled panels which shade from dark green to pale green to magenta and back again. In between each panel is a round blister pearl. Each connecting link has a hard-to-read mark, probably a lion, also the marks for Birmingham, 1909. The maker’s mark is “S&E” for Schaverien & Eastmead. It has the original safety chain. One enamel panel has a small black spot, and one has a small chip in the enamel, barely visi...

This lavalier is enameled in two shades of blue, with a pearl dangle. The front is composed of 3 panels of enamel; the outer ones are in the shape of sweet stylized hearts, in dark blue. The center is a lighter color, and the back is enameled in a lovely sky blue. Overall it is in very good condition, though the enamel on the back shows a small amount of wear on the high points. It measures 2” from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pearl. Unmarked. C. 1900. Comes with a 19-1/2” silver...

Plique a jour, that unusual, difficult, and beautiful enameling technique that gives a stained glass effect, dates from the 15th century. It was used by Cellini, then revived in the late 1800s in France. This plique a jour pendant is centered with an oval opal and accented with eight colorless brilliants and a fresh water pearl dropper. The translucent enamel is an unusual and lovely blue in color. The metal is 900 silver, suggesting that the piece is most likely German or Austrian in origin. Ci...

This heavily engraved pin is from the estate of Helen Aman, who escaped from the Bolshevik Revolution to (eventually) settle in California - it was one of her childhood jewels. It consists of a bell (with a clapper – but it doesn’t actually chime) dangling from an angled bar. Marked 84 for 875 silver, it also has a partial city mark, probably for Moscow. It measures 1-3/8” x 7/8", and is in excellent antique condition, with a nice patina. (For more of Helen’s story, contact us.) The pho...

Joan is one of the patron saints of France, and patron saint of soldiers. This is an intricate design by Edmond-Henri Becker, well-known French medalist. The front of this piece shows Joan of Arc in profile, also a shield decorated with a sword, a crown, and 2 fleurs-de-lis. Above her head is a banner saying “1429” and “Jehanne d’Arc”. The back shows a banner with a saint (or possibly the Madonna and Child – the metal is a bit worn here) with two people praying. Also shown are a spea...

This elegant sterling silver fancy-link chain from the era of the Titanic (but possibly as late as the Art Deco period – Downton Abbey!), is interesting enough to be worn on its own, or you could hang a pendant or watch from it.
