Large Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period ovoid form lidded porcelain jar decorated with a polychrome enameled design of a scholar in a roundel at the upper right reading a story about the scene below featuring an oxherd and rural commoners in a landscape setting. A black ink inscription is on the back of the jar and stylized characters surround the finial on the lid. The foot rim is unglazed. Circa 1900. Measures about 13” high to the top of the finial by 8” diameter. Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. There is minor typical wear to the overglaze enamels and gilt at the lid. This pair of vases is from the estate of an 88-year-old Tucson woman who purchased her collection in antique shops in New York City in the 1950’s to 1970’s.
