Japanese late Meiji to Taisho period Sumida Gawa handled mug with brown, green, and off-white flambé glaze coating the interior and dripping down the exterior of the faintly ribbed unpainted pottery surface. An applied child in high relief bends over on a ledge to reach for a snail. A glazed plaque with a Ryosai mark in underglaze blue is on the back. 3 7/8” high. Early 20th century. Very good overall condition with no cracks, chips, or losses. This mug is from an old Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
