Anonymous Korean Joseon dynasty ink and color on silk or fabric minhwa folk painting densely painted with a variety of Confucian vignettes illustrating scenes of filial piety, including caring for infirmed elderly relatives and rescuing them from tigers and other dangers. A large demon mask is at the top. Scrolled format with cream-colored silk mount. 19th century. 83” x 14 1/2" (painting: 69 5/8” x 10 7/8”). Good overall condition. There is staining to the back of the mounting that is only barely visible on the front at the upper right corner. There are some old brown crease marks and there is soiling and wear to the painting. From the Phoenix, Arizona collection of a former American expatriate to Asia. The painting was purchased in Seoul between 1976-1978.
