Old Chinese lapis lazuli carved Guanyin figure reclining barefoot with hair upswept in a chignon and dressed in a flowing robe pouring fluid from a vase she holds in her right hand. An old price tag on the custom stand reads $1200. Please note that the lapis color is somewhat darker than the images suggest. Guanyin: 3 1/2" long x 2 1/4" wide x 3 1/8” high (4 1/4" high on the stand); custom stand: 4” long x 3” wide x 1 1/4” high; weight of figure: 214 grams (7 1/2 oz). Very good overall condition. From the estate of a Tucson, Arizona physician. His collection was acquired in San Francisco in the 1970s from several prominent galleries. A note retained with the piece (see image) states Shibata. In 1977, Daibutsu Gallery in San Francisco sold several carvings from the collection of Ichiro Shibata, raising the possibility that this carving might have originated from that collection.
