Large antique Japanese lacquered wood ovoid form "jikiro" (ceremonial food container) with a pedestal base and dome-shaped cover decorated overall with chrysanthemums surrounded by gold scrolling foliage on a black ground. Red interior. Red mark to base. Measures 13" diameter x 9 1/2"H. Meiji Period (late 19th century). Lacquered food containers holding delicacies were presented by wealthy families at weddings and other important occasions. Good overall condition with some warping. One crack in the lid about 2" long. Some chips and lacquer loss primarily at the edge of the lid.
