Vintage 62-drawer Korean elm wood apothecary (medicine) chest, or Yak Jang. Three large drawers extend across the top, 35 drawers are along the bottom section, and the upper section has two doors, decorated with brass hardware, which lock with an original brass fish form lock to protect 24 interior drawers. Each drawer has a brass pull and is carved with ideographs corresponding to a particular herbal remedy. The door fronts and sides are accented by tightly woven reed. This chest was purchased by expatriates to Korea in the early 1980s from Kim's Antique. Appears to date from the mid-20th century. Measures about 37"L (top), 29 1/4"L (chest itself) x 37"H (to the flat portion of the top) x 11 3/4"D. Very good overall condition. The hardware was recently polished by the previous collector but should regain a nice patina in time if desired. Shipping quotes provided on request.
