JJE was one of the most distinguished and successful painters of the late 19th C. He lived most his life in New England, and according to Wikipedia, his "favorite subject is the November Twilight of New England and the half lights of early spring, and late autumn and winter dawn and evening." He always said that his greatest teacher was nature. He did travel to Germany and France, where he was influenced by Impressionism. He had many exhibitions, including one at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts. Today, he is represented at numerous museums including The Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
