Rare handwrought sterling silver repousse pin designed and signed c.1940 by Taxco, Mexico artist Hector Aguilar(1905-86). Measures 1 3/4" X 1 3/4". Hallmarks- HA 940 TAXCO. Beautiful condition with no dents, dings or repairs. Pin back and safety are tight and secure. Aguilar designed and executed a series of stylized animal head pins based on designs from the Codex Nuttall. Examples are pictured in SILVER MASTERS OF MEXICO by Penny Morrill on p. 60. The animal head pins were also featured and explained in detail in the museum exhibit WILLIAM SPRATLING AND THE MEXICAN SILVER RENAISSANCE and pictured p. 128 of the catalog by Penny Morrill. The Codex Nuttall describes this design as the "Yucatan deer with conventionalized antler, glyph for Nahua day sign Macatl, Nuttall."
