Rare sterling silver necklace designed and signed circa 1930's by American and Taxco, Mexico artist William Spratling(1900-67). The eagle and serpent pendant measures 3 1/4" long X 2 1/2" wide. The chain is 19" long. The necklace weighs 43 grams, 1.5 oz. Beautiful condition and patina. Slide in clasp is tight and secure. Signed with Spratling's early WS, 980, TAXCO, MEXICO. The necklace is pictured in Gobi Strombergs's SILVER SEDUCTION: THE ART OF MEXICAN MODERNIST ANTONIO PINEDA on p. 33 where Stromberg states "The eagle and serpent recall the icon on the Mexican flag and symbolize the founding of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, on the ruins of which Mexico City was built. The iconography of Spratling's eagle and serpent derives from the Codex Borgia, a Pre-Columbian painted manuscript." Also pictured on spatlingsilver.com and in Spratling Silver: A Field Guide by Phyllis Goddard.
