Rare sterling silver and bead necklace designed and signed circa 1960's by American & Taxco, Mexico artist William Spratling (1900-67). Necklace measures 16 1/2" long. Beads measure approx. 1/2" wide. Overall beautiful condition. Two green beads on either side at the very back have a chip but when spun toward the neck do not show. (see pics). 3 gemologists have given us 3 opinions about the green beads - green jasper, Aztec Mayan, & Mexican jade. Spratling designed a similar necklace using yellow jasper. That necklace is pictured on p. 210 of WILLIAM SPRATLING AND THE MEXICAN SILVER RENAISSANCE. Spratling collected pre-Columbian and Mayan beads and artifacts and often incorporated them into his designs.
