Original watercolor by Irene Lagorio (American, 1921-1994), circa 1950, in excellent original condition. This painting is signed l.r. It bears a typed exhibition label which gives the name of the artist, the title of the work ("The Red Buoy, Moss Landing"), the medium (watercolor), and the original price ($145). 17" by 21" in its original frame, 11" by 15" work alone. Irene Lagorio was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, and art critic in the San Francisco Bay area. She exhibited with the California Watercolor Society (1942-1955) and at the De Young Museum (1956) as well as with the Carmel Art Association. She studied at the University of California, and at Columbia University. She was the second director of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts (housed in the Legion of Honor in San Francisco), from 1951 to 1956. This painting is a marvelous example of a California School watercolor of the mid-century period. Irene Lagorio is listed in all the usual reference works and databases.
