Original watercolor by Henry Schnakenberg (American, New York, 1892-1970), in its original frame and in excellent condition. Dated 1959 and titled on a label verso. 12" by 5.5" work alone, 18" by 12" in its frame. Signed "Schnakenberg" lower right. Still bears the original label from the famed Downtown Gallery, Edith Halpert's venue, in NYC. With a second label from the estate of Edith Halpert.
Henry Schnakenberg was propelled into an art career after the 1913 Armory show, where he was impressed by the Ash Can school works exhibited. Many of the Ash Can artists taught at the ASL, where Schnakenberg did study--Kenneth Hayes Miller served as his mentor there, John Sloan was also one of his instructors--and where he eventually taught himself.
