Oil painting on circular canvas (32" in diameter) by Bertha Ballou (American/ 1891-1978). This is an extraordinary copy of Botticelli' Madonna of the Magnificat, from the Uffizi in Florence. This work was painted in Florence in 1938. It is in excellent untouched original condition. It is signed l.r. "Ballou, aft. Botticelli" and dated "38". Bertha Ballou is a well-listed Washington State painter, born and active early on in NY, who also studied in Boston, with Dumond, Blumenschein, Tarbell, Merryman, etc. The painting also bears verso an Uffizi Gallery's official's certificate of inspection indicating that the painting is a "true copy" (official stamp). This work was until recently in the collection of Holy Trinity Episcopalian Church in Spokane, which had commissioned it from the artist while she was in Italy.
