Original oil painting on board (24" x 18") by Abraham Mark Datz (American/1889-1969), signed and dated 1956 L.R; also signed, dated, titled, and numbered on the back (the artist kept a catalogue of his works). This somewhat surrealist--or rather mystical-- still-life is in excellent untouched original condition, and still retains its original frame. Abraham Mark Datz was a Russian Jew who came to the United States in 1903 and settled in New York. He is known as a painter, a sculptor, and an etcher. His works come very rarely on the market. Syracuse University maintains a Datz archive. His works are held in many museum collections, including the Whitney Museum's. We also currently have an etching by this artist, from the WPA period (industrial harbour scene) as well as another oil painting, an unusual landscape, dating from the same period as "The Challenge". Please inquire.
