This bag looks like it's made of bakelite, but it doesn't test as such. I went and learned a lot about early plastics from Andrea DeNoto's book, " Art Plastic," and the best I can come up with is Thermoset Phenolic Resin. That said, whatever the material, this is an extraordinary bag in extraordinary condition. Except for some light surface wear on the back side of the clutch, the bag seems perfect. It measures 9 7/8" (25.5 cm) by 6" (15.6 cm) It is a hair under 3/4"(2.3 cm) wide when it is unstretched (filled it measures 1 1/4" (3.6cm) in depth--so there is room inside for keys, money, etc). The inside of the bag is black leather and the lining and interior of the fold over flap is of moire faille. The interior has a zipper compartment , a compartment behind the zipper compartment and an elasticized smaller pocket. The zipper (which works perfectly) has a patent # dating it to February 7, 1928. The snap closure holds nicely. This rare and lovely bag is a treasure for either the collector or the fashionista looking for something special. I think the photos speak for themselves. It is in excellent vintage condition.
