Mesmerizing 18K substantial ring with large fire opal cut en cabochon and mined in Mexico. The fire opal is securely embedded in its solid gold enclosure, an important factor as opals require a setting that is substantial to protect the stone. A matrix opal is one which is cut with the host rock included and is cut in such a way that the patterns of the fire opal within the rock are seen. It is difficult to remove the opal from the rhyolite host rock without damage. Cabochon opals with this style of cutting are known as "cantera opals", or quarry opals. This one is flawless. The "aardvark" image on the bottom likely connotes a maker's mark. The egg shape and iridescent warm red tones of the opal in matrix and the hand cut gold setting make this fire opal ring one that is not to be missed.
Suitable for both men and women.
