This is an working compass pendant, an unusual to find and in remarkably good condition. Compasses would have been considered "necessaries" for men. In all likelihood, this was worn by the man, who, expected to take the lead in such situations, might need a compass for the purpose of navigation. The compass has a crystal face and a lovely detail of a gold carved "flower" at the apex of the compass (shown in images). There is a gold bale attached to the compass and a gold split ring attached to the bale.
