Intricately carved, our hand- carved hand brooch is made up of a material called Bog Oak. Bog Oak is a type of peat that is native to Ireland; the Irish are quite proud of their bog oak jewelry. It resembles wood and has slight graining, usually appearing on the underside (and can be seen in our photos). Bog oak was always carved, never molded. Unquestionably Victorian, it is unreproducible; you never see it in contemporary jewelry. It was at its peak during the first half of the 19th century, often used as mourning jewelry. You can be assured our bog oak hand brooch is antique and genuinely old.
