This homespun wool quilt is as "arty" as it is early. It is made of a combination of homespun wools that date to the first quarter of the 19th century. The combination of plaids and checks next to the solid coral and red makes a very eye catching pairing. The back is made of the same fabrics set in irregular rectangles. It has very basic quilting in a herringbone pattern. Condition is excellent with slight wear to several inches of the binding. Measurements are 66" x 82"...

This Pot of Tulips quilt has an unusual quality that makes for something of an abstract pattern. The combination of color; the shapes between the pots as well as the placement of the floral designs make one step back for a moment to realize that the primary pattern is actually the Pots of Tulips. The quilt measures 78 inches square. It is freshly laundered and in pristine condition. Made circa 1900; Pennsylvania origin.

This Snowflake applique quilt is very much like the scherenschnitte paper cutout designs popular in the 19th century among Pennsylvania Germans. While usually seen done with paper, one does not often find variations in fabric. This is also a most unusual color combination of a light peach on indigo. The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. Measurements are 76" x 78". Made late 1880's; Pennsylvania origin.

The Ocean Waves quilt pattern is generally made of groups of connected blocks like this one. Since this is just one, perhaps it would be more aptly called an ocean wave. In any case, the doll quilt is made with small triangles measuring about 3/4" to a side. It is in excellent, probably unwashed condition. Measurements are 9 1/4" square. Made circa 1880; nicely hand stitched.

This patriotic Flag Quilt takes wonderful liberties with literal flag designs. The true American flag has five point stars while this one uses eight point Evening Stars, a nod to the maker's quilting experience. She also went "outside the box" by using sixteen red and white stripes rather than the traditional thirteen. The maker's interest in the graphic design outweighed her need for a literal flag. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition...

This Lady of the Lake quilt is made with an especially soothing background print of a soft brown with gray overtones. Multicolor triangles of reds, browns and pinks add liveliness. The mauve border fabric is most unusual in that it is the front and back of pocket watches! The quilt measures 82" x 102", unusually large for the period in which it was made. The quilt would easily fit a queen or king size bed. It is in excellent, unwashed condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.

This simple pattern doll quilt is brilliantly designed. Whole blocks of brown and white striped fabric alternate with pieced blocks that are so finely sewn they appear to be printed as well. Use of the brown stripe set on the diagonal makes a clever binding. Condition is excellent. Measurements are 13 inches x 13 1/2 inches. New Hampshire origin; circa 1880.

This Barnraising Log Cabin Quilt is a most striking piece both because of the overall pattern as well as the unusual addition of the patriotic stars that appear to float upon the background of the quilt. The stars are actually printed, likely from a flag or bunting. Condition is excellent. Measurements are 82 inches square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890.
