This bold light and dark quilt pattern of squares and triangles is particular to the community of Perkiomenville in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The example here is in pristine, unwashed condition. It has fabrics from the first decade of the 20th century as well as many from the late 19th. The consistent use of the solid red and blue fabrics intensifies the already dramatic pattern. Measurements are 74 inches square.

LeMoyne Stars crib quilt done in shades of green and teal blue. The teal border and sashing fabric is particularly beautiful and unusual. Each star block measures 6 1/4 inches to a side. Varied placement of the light and dark diamonds comprising the arms of the stars give a nice twinkling movement to the piece. The pattern allows the crib quilt to be used equally effectively whether vertical or horizontal. Measurements are 36" x 44". The fabrics are all strong and intact...

This Puss in the Corner quilt (aka Improved Nine Patch) is made of a beautiful assortment of printed fabrics dating from the 1830's to 1850's. The quilt is light and airy with each off block quilted with an 8 petal flower. The fabrics are strong and in excellent condition. There is one area of scattered brown staining on the border and going into two of the adjoining blocks. It is shown in the last thumbnail photo. The quilt is a delight for early fabric lovers as few of the fabrics are repeated...

Could these two black cats be any cuter? On the left is a beanbag with printed facial features and paws. Eyes are buttons with a red ribbon neck bow. It is 7 inches in height; excellent condition. Price is $170. On the right is a homemade cat with an embroidered face and collar. The two paws are different. I believe the right is meant to be a streamlined version of a wrap around tail. It is 8 inches tall; excellent condition. Price is $140.

New York Beauty is a quilt pattern not often seen probably because of the precision needed to do it well. It is based upon curves and points, two of the most difficult elements to execute well. This example is among the finest I have seen in terms of piecing; quilting; design and condition. To begin, the proportions are perfect. There is wonderful balance between the patterned blocks and the white off blocks. Rising Suns at the intersections add density and variation...

This bold, richly colored Princess Feather quilt is the finest of its type that I have seen. The colors are spectacular together. The detail and workmanship are superb. The border is a lush continuation of the four block feathers. The central star-like design with berries is a wonderful focal point. It is very well quilted with a waffle pattern in the interior and stitching following the applique in the border. It is all done in dark brown thread. The quilt is in outstanding, unwashed condition...

This Nine Patch crib quilt is as crisp as the day it was made some 135 years ago. It is in pristine, unwashed condition. The fabrics are a nice combination of calico prints with an especially unusual material for the border. The two lighter blocks may have been made to indicate that side for the head. One of the squares in the lower right corner is especially dear as it is made of two different fabrics - not quite enough to go around...

Whimsical would be the best way to describe this unusual fruit quilt. I believe they are meant to be apples but one can also make a case for cherries. Regardless of which you prefer, it is in excellent condition; made circa 1870. It is quilted with concentric diamonds and has a border on three sides that alternates the colors of the fruit. Measurements are 80 inches square.

This Russian Sunflower pattern quilt also goes by the names of Rising Sun and Sunburst. Regardless of the name, it is a difficult pattern to execute and this one is particularly well done using a terrific assortment of fabrics dating from the 1830's to the 1850's. The It is quilted with small stitches in diagonal lines. The quilt was made by Rachel Blackmore McLin (1800 - 1874) who lived in Leesburg, Tennessee. Condition is excellent...

This Hexagons quilt is unusual for several reasons. It is a charm quilt which means that no fabric is repeated. Many are similar but on close examination it is evident that they are not the same print. The overall design of the pattern is also well out of the ordinary. A number of the fabrics have figures and animals. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 82" x 88", large for the 1870's when it was made. Pennsylvania origin.

Touching Stars was a popular quilt pattern in Pennsylvania in the 19th century. This example is especially finely quilted with a variety of intricate floral patterns in the white off blocks. The batting is quite thin so the quilting may not show up as well on the screen as in real life. The colors are thoughtfully planned with the yellow centers adding a nice amount of "pop". Measurements are 90" square. Condition is immaculate. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870's.

This geometric quilt looks as though it would be a known pattern but I have been unable to locate another. I have given it a descriptive name but one would more accurately have to call it a Three and a Half Patch pattern. Setting it in strips with good use of lights and darks gives it lots of movement. Regardless of what one calls it, it is an interesting pattern made with beautiful fabrics that date from the 1850's to 1870's...

This well designed, bold Laurel Leaf quilt is a traditional pattern done in an unusual way. The same block is repeated throughout but the placement of color and the double sawtooth frames makes it appear as though more is going on. It gives it a contemporary feel even though it was made in the 1860's.The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 72" x 73".

This beautiful applique quilt appears to be an original pattern alternating with traditional oakleaves. The red fabric is as unusual as the pattern. It is very well quilted with wreaths between the applique. The centers have different designs including hearts; stars; apples; flowers and a pear. The quilt is in excellent unwashed condition. There is slight unevenness to the background that could be remedied with a wash but I don't feel it is necessary. Measurements are 86" x 88". Pennsylvania o...

This stunning Lone Star (aka Star of Bethlehem) has all of the features one would wish for in a quilt of this type. It is finely quilted with floral patterns; crosshatch and quadruple diagonal lines. It has a thin batting that makes it a little difficult to see the quilting well in the photos. The central star is framed with borders of diamonds; Lemoyne Stars and Tree Everlasting. The outer chintz border has cherubs throughout. Colors may have softened a bit with age but they are a wonderfully h...
