This finely made Windmill Blades Log Cabin quilt is one of the most elegant I have seen. The pieces are small and wonderfully color coordinated to create concentric frames. Most astounding is the wide, elaborately embroidered floral border.
The quilt is signed Mary Kroeger and Louis Kroger; Baltimore Maryland. Mary was born in 1826 in Hanover, Germany. It is not known at what age she came to the United States and married Louis. She lived until 1900.
Louis owned a grocery and provisions business at Schroeder and Lombard Streets. It must have been quite successful as it afforded Mary the time and fabric to create such an astounding quilt.
It measures 86" x 88". Made circa 1870's. Condition is excellent.
The quilt is available for purchase while it is currently on exhibit at the New England Quilt Museum.
