A painter from Cleveland, Ohio, Ream began his career in the arts while working as an assistant to photographer, James F. Ryder. He later moved to New York City and made a name for himself as a successful painter of still lifes. Ream presumably shipped his paintings back to Cleveland in the 1870's and Ryder exhibited them in his gallery, an extension of his photographic studio.
