The Parting Benediction

Watercolor on paper, signed and dated: "Rome, 1877" and titled and signed on a paper label on the reverse.

Margaret Gillies was a genre and portrait painter. After her mother died, she was raised by her uncle, Lord Gillies, an Edinburgh judge. He raised her in an artistic and literary society where she met Sir Walter Scott, Jeffery and Lord Eldon. In her late teens she went to London where she received painting lessons from Frederick Cruickshank in miniature painting. By the age of 24 she had been commissioned to paint a miniature of Wordsworth, and she also painted Charles Dickens. From 1832-61 she contributed portrait to the Royal Academy. In 1851 she went to Paris, where she received instruction form Ary Scheffer. After her return from paris, she exhibited occasionally in oils, but soon turned exclusively to painting in watercolor. Her subjects were largely domestic, romantic or sentimental in nature: these are the paintings for which she became best known. She became an Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1852.
