Michael Thonet (1796-1871) began making his iconic bentwood furniture when he discovered how to bend light, strong wood into graceful shapes using hot steam. In 1849, he opened his own shop with four of his sons and garnered numerous prizes for his designs. In 1853, Thonet transferred his company to his sons. As he improved his production methods he was able to open new factories. His innovative bending technique allowed for the industrial production of a chair for the first time ever. What was revolutionary about his furniture was the fact that it could be disassembled into a few components and thus produced in a work-sharing processes. This allowed the Thonet Furniture Factory to become a global company. The impact of Thonet was extraor- dinary and far reaching. He affected the business of furniture, the avant-garde art establishment, and the design process of many products, from his own day to the present.
