Schelfhout was a painter of animals, animated landscapes, seascapes. He also painted in watercolor and worked as a designer. His father worked as a frame maker at the Hague. Schelfhout was a student of J. Brekenheimer and also studied in the academies in Brussels and Amsterdam. He came to be known as one of the three great landscape artists of Holland, along with B.C. Koekkoek and F.M. Kruseman. He excelled in his representation of winter scenes.
