Child Resting with Dog (Circa 1830-40)
After a similar composition by Thomas Sully (American 1783-1872)
Oil on canvas, mounted on panel.
Painting size: 23” x 30”
Frame size: 32 1/2” x 39”
This charming genre painting shows a young girl briefly at rest, having filled her upturned hat with pink and white roses. The stylized rendering of her curved brow, bow mouth and exact curls suggests the work of a naive artist; yet, an attentive one as well, evidenced by the dog’s watchful expression, waiting for his companion’s signal to get up and start their next adventure.
Images of children with dogs were an all-too- favorite theme for British and German genre painters during the Victorian period. The atmospheric rendering of the landscape and the girl’s white dress slipping off her shoulder in Greuze-like fashion may indicate that the painter had a sophisticated knowledge of painting and its practitioners.
