Ballavoine was a French genre, portrait and historical painter whose scenes, although seemingly conventional, are lauded for the sense of intimacy and freedom surrounding the subjects. His Paris scenes, like Jean Beraud’s, capture the “spectacle of the street”.
He studied under Pils and began exhibiting at the Salon de Paris in 1886.
