KOYORI JINGASA

'Jingasa' samurai hat made of 'Koyori' (string made from twisted paper) coated with black lacquer, with a gold-painted family crest of 'Daki-Myoga-mon' (Tied Japanese wild gingers). Edo period, 18-19th century.
Originally bamboo or thin iron-made Jingasa was used to be simplified substitute for heavy 'Kabuto' helmet, then Jingasa was tried to be made as lighter as possible like material of leather or wood for a samurai's ornamental outer gear during the Edo period after the civil war era. So, such Koyori was the lightest material as the result and actually quite rare. In fine antique condition, though some holes as seen. approx. D 41-39.5cm (16.14-15.55in)
