Japanese 'komo' mat woven with 'makomo' (water oat), Showa period, 20th century. approx. 100 x 77cm (39.37 x 30.31in)
Because komo is more handy and easier to be carried on than usual straw mat, it has been used by beggars as their necessities since the Edo period. That's why Japanese beggars are also called komo. As the reference image of how to be used, such woodblock print in the Edo period (pic#9) would be attached with this piece.
