A magnificent panel on black silk. The quatrefoil cartouche heavily embroidered with five couched gilt-thread horned dragons, rocks, waves, buddhistic and other symbols, in fine bright colours. Excellent condition throughout. 1330 x 950mm One photo shows a 750 ml wine bottle for comparison with size. Late Qing or early Republic, 1880-1925 C.E.

Front and, very unusually, two top side panels from a large imperial yellow throne back cushion cover, heavily embroidered with a bold five-toed horned dragon amongst clouds, bats and buddhistic symbols, surrounded by a further eight dragons. 18th century. 74 x 75 cms.

Provenance: Christie's 1997.

Condition: Faults. In need of restoration, but a very scarce item.

The large back cushions of Qing dynasty thrones are normally of this very distinctive shape...

A good Chinese Mandarin square, the gauze embroidered in kossu in a predominantly blue and white palette, with the fifth civil rank silver pheasant. Lined in pale blue silk. Qing dynasty, 19th century. Some small losses but generally good. 29 cms. wide.

A rare front civil rank badge with auspicious symbols but without waves, water or rocks. Lined with pale blue silk.

These badges date from immediately after the failed Reform Movement of 1898 when the Guangxu Emperor attempted reforms. The Dowager Empress had him placed under detention and ordered the execution of officals who had colluded with him. These badges were produced for a short period only and are scarce...

A Chinese ladies informal short robe of blue and cream damask silk, with butterflies, crocus and flowers; deep sleeves and side fastening. Silk lined and with detail to simulate a 'cloud collar'.
