A rare Chinese champleve and cloisonne enamel ornament, shaped as a bat and, exceptionally, enamelled with both translucent and opaque enamels. Qianlong (1736-95). 149mm wide. Provenance: Sir Rutherford Alcock KCB (1809-97), British consulate in Peking 1865-69. A pair of champleve and cloisonne ornaments in the shape of ruyi-sceptre terminals are illustated in Brinker & Lutz: 'Chinese Cloisonne: the Pierre Uldry collection' no. 233.
