CULTURE: Chimu ORIGIN: Peru / North Coast AGE: Ca. 1100 - 1470 A.D. DESCRIPTION: A small carved and inlaid box measuring 4 1/2" in length by 2 1/4" in height by 1 3/4" in width. Both longer sides and the top are ornamented with two deeply incised raptors with inlaid turquoise eyes. The ends of each wide side and top have inlays of turquoise and colored shell. There is a small wooden insert on the underside of the lid that may have been added at a later date to keep the lid in place and keep it from being misplaced. It is a small and beautifully crafted artifact that would show well in even the best collection.Provenance: A former Scottsdale, Arizona Gallery.
