ORIGIN: Mexico CULTURE: Maya AGE: Ca. 400 A. D. - 850 A. D. SIZE: 7 1/2" in length by 3" in width (The piece comes with a museum quality metal stand which makes the overall height 9" when mounted) DESCRIPTION: A long ornate and massive carrying handle for a huge urn in the form of a stylized serpent. The creature has raised eyes with a curling design outlining the pupils, raised elongated eyebrows, a tall horn with side horns mounted on his head, and a collar around his neck. A small area of another smaller front fin was lost in ancient times. He is fantastic and grotesque. There are scattered remnants of the original red pigment evident on several areas. With the stand this piece would be outstanding on a coffee table or mantlepiece. The original urn must have been enormous!
