CULTURE:Colima ORIGIN: West Mexico AGE: Ca.250 B.C. - 250 A.D. SIZE: 5 3/4" in height by 8" at the widest diameter. DESCRIPTION: A curious and unusual thick walled sturdy vessel with a low rounded form. The lower half is a raised ridged pumpkin or squash and the upper section is encircled by six human faces with wide rounded noses and braided rows of hair. The base clay is a muted red. The jar originally had a light white washed thin coating with substantial amounts remaining and other areas lost to time and usage. There are numerous mineral formations attesting to its great antiquity. It was a very difficult piece to photograph with its many angles and shapes and the photos really do not do justice to its odd beauty and visual appeal.
