CULTURE: Casas Grandes / Ramos Polychrome ORIGIN: Northern Mexico AGE: Ca.1250 - 1450 A.D. SIZE: 6" in height by 5" in diameter DESCRIPTION: A low rounded polychrome jar topped by an ovoid anthropomorphic head. The base clay color is tan/brown with design motifs in black and burnt orange. The round incised eyes are encased in horizontal black lines with a row of black circles above and topped by a flat crown with stylized macaw figures. The impression is of a mask as opposed to just pigment applied to the face. Geometric designs on the body of the vessel include fine black lines and ornate upright and inverted triangles. The jar has minor wear to the tip of the nose from ancient usage and there are a few areas of light professional paint enhancement. Many small mineral deposits attest to its great antiquity. ex.
