A unique form of a Casas Grands polychrome female effigy with an elegant elongated shape. The piece measures 6" in height by 4" in width and dates Ca. 1250 - 1450 A.D. from the famous site in Northern Mexico. The common representation of female effigies from this period are depicted by a female seated with her legs out displaying a distended vulva. This rare find is oblong. Her face is staring directly ahead and she has a perforated mouth. Her arms appear at the rear of the vessel and she seems to be pulling herself forward to perhaps assist the birthing of a child. Her vulva is exposed but in the rear and not the front. Highly unusual! She is profusely ornamented in colors of dark black and rich crimson painted over a thin white wash. She has dual original drilled holes at the top on both side for hanging or holding a cover of some type in place to keep out the bugs. Other than two small stabilized hairline cracks she is in "as found" condition with no restoration or overpaint. The jar has never been offered for sale before after many years of storage by the family.
