A snake slithers through the late summer grasses on this painting by Utsumi Koho dated 1901. Painted on silk, it has been completely remounted in a fine cloth border featuring blackened wood rollers. The scroll is 20-1/2 x 71-1/2 inches (52.5 x 182 cm) and is in fine condition. Utsumi Koho (Tsunejiro) was born in Chiba prefecture in 1878, the tenth year of the Meiji period. He studied the Shijo manner of painting under Mochizuki Kinpo. He was a member of the Nihon Geijutsu Kyokai, and received numerous awards in his lifetime.
